 What is root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment is a common dental procedure that eliminates bacteria from inside the tooth known as pulp, prevents reinfection and saves the natural tooth.

To understand root canal treatment, it is helpful to know the anatomy of the tooth. Inside each tooth under the hard layers of enamel and dentin, is a soft tissue called pulp. The pulp contains nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue and helps a developing tooth to grow roots. A fully developed tooth can survive without a pulp and continues to nourish from its surrounding tissue if the pulp needs to be taken out due to infection or tooth damage.

Pulp infection or damage can happen due to:

  • Deep tooth decay
  • Cracked tooth or chipped tooth
  • Sever gum disease
  • Repeated dental procedures on the tooth
  • Dental trauma even if no visible crack or chip on tooth
  • Broken or faulty existing tooth filling

If the infected or damaged pulp left untreated it can lead to pain, swelling and abscess.

Modern root canal treatment is similar to having a routine filling. We first anesthetize the tooth locallyand then clean out the infected pulp. The pulp then is replaced with root filling material and the tooth will be restored with a filling. Most teeth require a crown after root canal treatment to further protect the tooth.

Root canal treatment usually takes 2-4 appointments depending on the tooth condition and the person circumstances. However, the symptoms resolve right after the first appointment. You can expect comfortable experience during and after your appointment.

What Makes Root Canal Procedure A Better Option For Treating Decayed Tooth?

Root canal treatment helps saving the natural tooth rather than pulling the tooth out.

Saving natural tooth has many advantages:

  • Efficient chewing
  • Normal biting force and sensation
  • Natural appearance
  • Preserves jawbone
